| libR.so is built with the sometimes wrong -fpic instead of the always
| correct -fPIC.

Thanks for the bug report. This is exactly why we try the pre-release prior
to the actual release, in this case the scheduled April 24 release for R
2.3.0. 

As for your analysis, I need to run this by Kurt Hornik, the upstream
maintainer covering configure within R.  He is quite knowledgeable about the
innumerable special cases.  Ex-ante, I suspect that _globally replacing
-fpic with -fPIC_ may not be the best course of action.  Why don't we just
add a case for s390 ?  (Kurt, I'll send you Bastian's patch in separate
mail. Let's try to keep follow-ups in the BTS, so let's keep 
[EMAIL PROTECTED] in the header.
