Package: nvidia-kernel-common
Version: 20051028+1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

When starting the xserver (startx on xorg) :
Failed to load module "nvidia" (module does not exist, 0)

But, the nvidia driver is installed (nvidia-installer says the module is
compiled
in the kernel), whether I try with the provided package or with the nvidia
driver
 (tar.gz format).

Seems like the driver is still in /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/ and not in
/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/ but I don't know why

tidus:~# ls /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers
nvidia_drv.o nvidia_drv.so

tidus:~# ls /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/
apm_drv.so cirrus_alpine.so fbdev_drv.so imstt_drv.so nv_drv.so
rendition_drv.so sis_drv.so tseng_drv.so voodoo_drv.so
ark_drv.so cirrus_drv.so glint_drv.so mga_drv.so nvidia_drv.o
riva128.so sisusb_drv.so vesa_drv.so
ati_drv.so cirrus_laguna.so i128_drv.so neomagic_drv.so nvidia_drv.so
s3virge_drv.so tdfx_drv.so vga_drv.so
atimisc_drv.so cyrix_drv.so i740_drv.so newport_drv.so r128_drv.so
savage_drv.so tga_drv.so via_drv.so
chips_drv.so dummy_drv.so i810_drv.so nsc_drv.so radeon_drv.so
siliconmotion_drv.so trident_drv.so vmware_drv.so

Note : the same applies with v4l, but I don't know if it's related.

So the X server doesn't start anymore.

Hi,
nvidia-installer is upstream's installer, not appropriate to use with Debian. If you used it on one machine, please consider it "tainted" and use great care before opening another bug report based on that machine's behavior.

If there is really a bug causing this in Debian packages, it should almost certainly be assigned to nvidia-glx, rather than nvidia-kernel-common which is an obsolete package.
