I have checked the code and Kile is trying to open the plugin and not the library:
From src/kileviewmanager.cpp::1088 void Manager::createViewerPart(KActionCollection *actionCollection) { m_viewerPart = Q_NULLPTR; KPluginLoader pluginLoader(OKULAR_LIBRARY_NAME); KPluginFactory *factory = pluginLoader.factory(); if(!factory) { KILE_DEBUG_MAIN << "Could not find the Okular library."; m_viewerPart = Q_NULLPTR; return; } The plugin is currently shipped in the okular package itself, so I'll go forward and make okular an strict dependency. *Maybe* in the future we could look at splitting the plugin into it's own package, but I don't know if that's just too much. After all I guess most of the people using Kile are using okular too (the sole fact that this took so long to find points me to that).
