I believe we originally avoided this via 

  # https://debbugs.gnu.org/29464
  export DEB_CFLAGS_MAINT_APPEND += -fno-stack-protector

in debian/rules.  I wonder if that doesn't avoid the problem anymore, or
somehow the option's no longer making it all the way through.
