Probably the following line is the reason (taken from strace):

ENOENT (No such file or directory)
open("${prefix}/share/bzflag/fonts/",
O_RDONLY|O_NONBLOCK|O_LARGEFILE|O_DIRECTORY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file
or directory)
I guess it should look for fonts at /usr/share/... instead of
${prefix}/share/...
