Unreproducible for me.  Could you please provide backtrace?

    # rm /usr/share/emacs/site-lisp/w3m/*.elc
    $ emacs
    M-x toggle-debug-on-error RET
    M-x w3m RET
    $ emacs --no-init-file
    M-x w3m RET

If `emacs --no-init-file` works, the trigger may be in your init file.

w3m-el-snapshot 1.4.632+0.20210201.2305.54c3ccd-1 is available.
