No it wasn't from git... but I guess there's somewhere a check which looks whether any of the files used to build the manpages has a newer mtime than that. No strong opinions... I mean IMO there are pros and cons. Obviously as you said, keeping the build-dep list small is a pro. OTOH, the XZ backdoor taught us to build as much from pristine files as possible (IIRC the start of the was in some m4 script that was taken from the tarball whereas it could have also been taken from some pristine sources).
