Bug#1099497: Tracking Upstream Fixes

Thinking out loud here.

If this one little patch, applied to 9.12, fixes this issue and makes
the software usable for the vast majority of potential users...maybe
Upstream could be persuaded to make a maintenance release, 9.12.1,
which is 9.12 plus just this one little patch?
