This has been reported already, but not as useful as you did. Did this
happen originally during dist-upgrade and the switch from teTeX to
TeX Live? Did the dist-upgrade run without other problems, or did you
encounter any of the "needs Replaces" bugs?

Thank you. Norbert, I am seing strange things here. When I tried some
metafun format generation earlier today, after the first bug report, it
was put into /var/lib/texmf/web2c (not the engine subdir), as on
Pierre's system. Now it's even worse on my system, I get:

I do not get this even with "/{engine,}" removed from TEXFORMATS.
Do we need to ask upstream?
