BTW, I used the Lenny weekly testing snapshot. I may have figured a way around it, although I don't know the consequences.
When I attempted to retry the step "Install Base System", I was eventually presented with a list of 4 "kernels" When I choose "None" it allowed me to continue. I am trying it again to figure out exactly how I got around it and if the install will complete and work.
