I have a theory on this slang.
We have a word to say "that's a _beautiful_ girl": we say "gnocca".
Don't ask me why, maybe some other italian curios could add idea about.
But "gnocca" is the female of gnocco which is a kind of pasta made with
potatoes pressed and eggs and milk (iirc). And then gnocco/potato
gnocca/potato.
