Is this a legal requirement in the EU?
Yes - at least for end customers (can be reduced to 1 year between special kind of dealers).
Plus you don't have to proof that the drive has defects - instead the dealer from which you you bought the drive has to proof that the drive is 100% okay. The proof has to be good/strong enough to hold in court, that is.
So this is A Good Thing(tm) for customers over here.
