I don't think this is a big worry, those variables have been used for a
while and are unlikely to be changed, though I expect that over time
everyone will gravitate to using the freedesktop ones more and more (XFCE
switched completely already). But as freedesktop profiles are already
supported that shouldn't be a problem.
