The graphical version of d-i also boots with that parameter
(specifically with video=vesa:ywrap,mtrr vga=788).

So one approach might be to only configure the boot splash stuff to run
and pass the vga parameter if the system was installed using g-i. At
least that would avoid the few edge cases where vga= messes up the
display.
