FYI, CUPS is already on the desktop task and SANE is in my branch. codecs in main (gstreamer* stuff in main) could be added before Etch release. I already wrote about java and flash support in my previous message. 3d video drivers are in the same boat. We will have good wireless support in the kernel. I would like to add network-manager by default, but Joey Hess isn't convinced.

It should not be the default, but should be offered as an option. Also, sources.list does not have contrib and non-free sections enabled by default today. Nor offered as an option at default install. Nvidia and ATI 3D drivers are on these sections. SableVM 0.13 is now a complete implementation (0.13 is already on testing?). Blackdown Java also and more stable (but not so clean room). GCJ is not complete. Try running eclipse and you will run into problems soon. I guess a tasksel is more elegant than Automatix.
I want to add some non-free tasks (in contrib or non-free section) yes, but these won't be a option in the installer. If the user enable non-free and/or contrib sections after install, do the update (through synaptic). He will be able to install at least non-free java and flash support as a bundle. Nvidia and ATI 3d drivers AFAIK needs that the user change his X configuration. I think that if he can do that, he can mark and install the package using synaptic. Thoughts? regards, -- stratus
