I'm not sure whether it works everywhere, but splashy works 100% in my Dell
Latitude D510, including hibernation.

I also love the fact that the disk encryption password is asked without ever
leaving the splash screen, which is IMO part of a really great desktop
experience. Last I checked, usplash would fall you back to the text console
in order to ask for a LUKS password.
