There is already a script for this in the 'ifupdown-extra' package, together with additional functionality. See http://packages.debian.org/sid/ifupdown-extra. Please take a look at how it's implemented in that package and contribute it there instead of in the 'ifupdown' package. I agree with Marco in that this shouldn't be added to all systems but only to those that have that requirement as this adds additional requirements to a base package.
