It can do. Firmware has bugs, and many hardware manufacturers have an unfortunate habit of abandoning firmware after the product is no longer shipping. Sure, the most serious bugs get fixed before release, but other bugs may only appear in conjunction with other hardware or may turn out to be serious in some case that wasn't tested.
