One way to resolve this dilemma is to realize that 'Debian' can refer to
two things: the project and the distribution.

Debian the operating system is free software since non-free/contrib is
not part of Debian (== main).

Debian the project is not (strictly) a free software project since it
contains and supports the non-free part.

Thus, a reasonable position for a free software supporter may be to
support the Debian operating system but not support the Debian project.
