One reason for resolving the system hostname to 127.0.1.1 in an NSS service is that this allows us to list that service last on the "hosts:" line in /etc/nsswitch.conf, thus making 127.0.1.1 the resolved address of last resort, coming after addresses resolved via /etc/hosts and/or DNS.
