I think I'm going to bow out.  Our concept of how to design good upstream
software and what best practices are for standard tools are sufficiently
different that I don't think further line-by-line discussion is really a
productive use of either of our time.

I've had on my long-term to-do list for some time writing up what I
consider to be best practices and good coding style for putting together
software distributions.  Hopefully I'll be able to find some time to do
that.
