Right, check out /usr/doc/libc6/FAQ.Debian.gz for the word from the horse's mouth. Also, people (rightfully) mentioned considering make-kpkg for building your kernels. You can find it in the Debian kernel-package package. It makes building your kernel much easier, and (more importantly in my view) leaves you with a Debian package containing the new kernel.
