I think that making the choice of the desktop environment explicit by either prompting the user during the install (netinst) or by offering multiple explicitly named images will actually make it easier for some users. We get asked every now and then in #debian about the procedure to install different desktop environments and it is hard for some users to grasp that they have to make this choice in the boot menu and not during the software selection step.
