Dear Debian Developers and Project Members,
Hi Kat,
Thank you for caring about internet freedom, Debian and its values, and
thank you for taking the time to write to us.
Speaking in my own capacity -- no Debian Developer will be able to speak
for the whole project -- I fully share your concerns and wholeheartedly
agree with everything you wrote in your email. While I alone have no
power over the direction the project will take, I will do my part in
making sure Debian stays true to its values, no matter the cost. I would
expect most other Debian Developers and project members feel the same as me.
As for issuing a statement, beware that the current generalized attitude
towards the introduction of these laws is, essentially, stand by and see
what happens. In my opinion, this makes sense for now because projects
like Debian will never be able to comply with them, even if it wanted to
-- which it doesn't. So -- again in my opinion -- it's either these laws
get repealed/modified to the extent of being neutralized for Debian, or
Debian will likely need to stop distribution in the States/Countries
that introduce them.
Keep on defending freedom,
