Hi Otto!
I want to start a discussion about dismantling the
default-mysql-server and default-mysql-client virtual packages for
Forky (Debian 14), and transitioning the archive to point explicitly
to mariadb-server and mariadb-client.
+1. I find it weird that people keep saying "MySQL" when in fact they
mean MariaDB. And the differences between the two, as you say, are
getting bigger and bigger.
Despite pledges from the community, Oracle hasn't shown any signs of
being a better open source steward, the commit activity is decreasing
[4], and no new commits have been published for the main branch in the
past 5 months.

I took at brief look, and it seems that MySQL's GitHub repo is more of
a "let's dump stuff here every once in a while" than the actual place
where development happens. For instance, the latest 9.7.0 LTS release is
still in the 9.7 Git branch. So, I don't know that the default "trunk"
branch represents, but for sure it's not an indicator of development
activity.
That said, +1 for retiring default-mysql-*.
Bye!
