First I configured the SMTP daemon to listen to and allow relaying from
localhost if it didn't already. Then I installed msmtp and I reconfigured
the software to use msmtp instead of sendmail to send mail.

In this case, it was already possible to provide an arbitrary command-line
to override the default of using sendmail. If that's not possible,
obviously more work would be needed.

Specifically, I changed a default of:

    /usr/sbin/sendmail -oi -oem %s

to:

    /usr/bin/msmtp --host=localhost --read-envelope-from %s
