Both issues you found (503 from Varnish and 504 from haproxy) are in DSA's realm unfortunately. First guess is that there was a qps spike at the time, in any case the listeners were not appropriately provisioned - but the evidence is not in Munin. I'll report back on the issue once I figure out more.
