I think it's not necessary.  I did not test, but the following (or a
similar setting) should work well and please most people:

# ln -s xterm /usr/bin/X11/xterm-black
# cat >>/etx/X11/Xresources <<EOF
xterm-black*background: black
xterm-black*foreground: gray90
EOF
====

Branden, maybe it should be added to the X packages ?
