Some more info on this: An "Ultimate Boot CD" that is. The new style partition table is called GPT (GUID Partition Table); even with an old style partition it's possible to use new grubs: in that case, make sure your root partition starts at cylinder 2. If "sfdisk -d /dev/yourrootdevice" shows "start= 1", you won't be able to run a new grub.
