Subject: dpkg: lets a package overwrite a diversion
X-Reportbug-Version: 0.54
X-Mailer: reportbug 0.54
Date: Mon, 10 Apr 2000 00:28:00 +0200
Message-Id: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Package: dpkg
Version: 1.6.11
Severity: normal

When package A provides /foo/bar.A file, with a /foo/bar diversion,
and a package B providing a plain /foo/bar is then installed, it
overwrites the diversion without a warning. When B is removed,
/foo/bar is not available any more.

This currently shows in potato with gnuserv and xemacs* (see important
bug)

This bug is both old, and unclear; and I can't reproduce it:

syndicate tmp# dpkg-divert --divert /banana --add /banana-fruit
Adding `local diversion of /banana-fruit to /banana'

syndicate tmp# dpkg -i banana2.deb
Selecting previously deselected package banana.
(Reading database ... 128492 files and directories currently installed.)
Unpacking banana (from banana2.deb) ...
Setting up banana (2.0) ...

syndicate tmp# dpkg -L banana
/.
/stamp
/banana-fruit
locally diverted to: /banana

syndicate tmp# dpkg -i banana-icecream.deb
Selecting previously deselected package banana-icecream.
(Reading database ... 128493 files and directories currently installed.)
Unpacking banana-icecream (from banana-icecream.deb) ...
dpkg: error processing banana-icecream.deb (--install):
trying to overwrite `/banana', which is the diverted version of `/banana-f=
ruit'
Errors were encountered while processing:
 banana-icecream.deb

syndicate tmp# dpkg-divert --divert /banana.other --add /banana
Adding `local diversion of /banana to /banana.other'
syndicate tmp# dpkg -i banana.deb
Selecting previously deselected package banana.
(Reading database ... 128492 files and directories currently installed.)
Unpacking banana (from banana.deb) ...
Setting up banana (1.0) ...

syndicate tmp# dpkg -L banana
/.
/banana
locally diverted to: /banana.other
/stamp

syndicate tmp# dpkg -i banana-icecream.deb
(Reading database ... 128493 files and directories currently installed.)
Unpacking banana-icecream (from banana-icecream.deb) ...
dpkg: error processing banana-icecream.deb (--install):
trying to overwrite `/banana', which is also in package banana
Errors were encountered while processing:
 banana-icecream.deb

I'm therefore closing this bug, unless clear information can be provided.

Have you ever, ever felt like this?
Had strange things happen? Are you going round the twist?
