Long ago, you reported a dpkg failure while updating login. I don't trust the "not a dir" message; see bug #376200. Are you still reachable at this address? Is the bug still reproducible? Could it have failed for some other reason, eg. disk full? Could you strace the processes and send the output (wishful thinking, no?)
