Package: dpkg
Version: 1.14.20
Followup-For: Bug #483655

For my version of the bug (dpkg: ../../src/packages.c:221: process_queue:
Assertion `dependtry <= 4' failed.)
there is a partial work-around.

*If* you know what package it is stuck on, you can remove that
package with dpkg, then re-install. I don't know how to find
which package to remove, though. (For me, it was an obvious,
special case...)

I did this:

 sudo dpkg --configure nvi
 dpkg: error processing nvi (--configure):
  package nvi is not ready for configuration
   cannot configure (current status `triggers-awaited')
   Errors were encountered while processing:
    nvi
    $ sudo dpkg --triggers-only -a
    $ sudo dpkg --configure -a
    dpkg: ../../src/packages.c:221: process_queue: Assertion `dependtry <= 4'
failed.
    Aborted
    $ sudo dpkg --remove nvi
