Michael Stone <[email protected]> reported the same problem after unpacking
strace, so I guess the problem is really in apt.
Both reports, Michael's and mine are reported to debian-testing.

Given that this bug is almost 10 years old, apt was not reporting
childs segfaulting at the time, there's no backtrace or coredump
available and that I cannot see anything related in recent versions
of dpkg, I'm going to just close this bug report.
