But then it also insists on finding ./debian/changelog in that
same directory.

That makes some very large assumptions about directory layout for
something as simple as querying/verifying a source format string.

e.g. this was to be used in svn-buildpackage in which case we have:

./foo/tarballs/foo_1.2.3.orig.tar.bz2
./foo/trunk/debian/changelog
./foo/trunk/debian/source/format

(trunk cannot be assumed here, it could be absent in a branch.)

Why does --print-format need to locate the .orig.tar.gz|bz2 anyway?

BTW the bash completion for --print-format is also broken, it does not
allow a directory to be specified after the option when a directory is
mandatory.)
