Package: dpkg-repack
Version: 1.8
Severity: wishlist
dpkg-repack is a fantastic tool! Thanks a lot for providing it.
I think it suffers from one major problem though -- it does not
update the version number and is thus limited to very small-scale
distribution, and not suitable for automatic updates.
You are already adding a note to the package description, which is
good. Could you also make it bump up the version number? I suggest
by appending something like ".${IDSTR}.1" to the version number, or
increasing the last digit, if the version number already contains
the ${IDSTR}. I would make IDSTR=repacked the default. The
corresponding changelog entry could then state something similar to
the package description, or even list the changed files if the
package contains a md5sums file.
Thanks for your consideration.

Indeed, I don't think this is a good idea. In any case dpkg-repack has
the --generate option that can be used to do any mangling desired
before running dpkg-deb. So I don't see the need to extend it further.
Closing this now.
