It's because dpkg-source automatically unapplied patches as a part of the previous build, so `-nc -b' needs to re-apply them and recompile. It just wastes my time. I've found this fragment in man page: --unapply-patches Unapply the patches in the --after-build hook. You usually don't need this option as dpkg-source will automatically unapply the patches if it did apply them during --before-build. OK, it might be a very good option for one-time builds, but I'm pretty sure it will be considered as nightmare by any developer who actually wants to work on the package.
