No, even with git it breaks the same way. But what I did is
# in the git repo
gbp buildpackage -us -uc -rfakeroot -S
# then
cowbuilder --build --buildresult . dpkg*.dsc

And I can confirm that with the version from git
dpkg-source -b .
works again.
