Package: dpkgVersion: 1.21.21
On a new install start-stop-daemon is not installed (or is installed
to wrong place)
It may be the installer not the package.

The install is Debian Testing (Bookworm) as at about 23.00 on 12 March
23 (UTC) to a USB drive on a Raspberry 4B with 4 G RAM

I used the procedure found at
https://forums.raspberrypi.com/viewtopic.php?t=282839(Expert menu
driven install)
Install included mate desktop.
Install proceeded uneventfully to successful conclusion.
On first use of Synaptic the error message shown in attachment is
displayed.
I could not find the start-stop-daemon where expected from the error
message. (dpkg: warning: "start-stop-daemon" not found in PATH or not
exectuable)

I copied an old version of the daemon from a Debian 11 install to the
location and Synaptic then worked.  I did a re-install of dpkg which
overwrote whatever bits of dpkg were originally installed. (sorry)

I encountered this problem in Debian 11 on the RasPi..
I have not had this problem on amd64 or i386 although I have not tried
Bookworm.

better if you'd reply-to-all to include your replies in the bug

Got a mail off-BTS that a new install did not reproduce the problem,
so I'll be closing this now.

Thanks,
