I've been unable to reproduce the failure you say you saw with
devscripts-1.8.1; when I tried it, it continued processing through a
make error, whichever version of devscripts I used.
So I'm not worried about this bug from the devscripts point of view,
but it still exhibits a bug in dpkg-buildpackage.
