Update: doing dpkg -i xbase_3.3.2.3a-8.1.deb again caused the file to be installed this time round... I don't suppose it's going to be possible to figure out what occurred here without any information; I'll try to remember to log debug info from dpkg when I upgrade my other machine, in case the problem occurs there too.
