Thanks God, I'm not the only one with that problem. There are two problems here.
The first one (the one that causes the coredump) I'm assuming is a l10n problem, since it goes away when I set LC_ALL to C. I guess the l10n people should be told about that... I also tried gzipping and gunzipping the /usr/doc and that completed without errors, so I don't think the problem is gzip. The problem is very repeatable, but it occurs only on some packages (samba, gimp, libpam0g, etc. from unstable). I tried downgrading to the dpkg from frozen and that didn't help.
