It would be nice if the error message better matched the command in
the following situation:
polya:~ $ dpkg -X /var/cache/apt/archives/passwd_19990827-8_i386.deb
dpkg-deb: --vextract needs a target directory.
Perhaps you should be using dpkg --install ?
