dpkg requires gcc exactly for Linux or HURD.
gcc doesn't work on freebsd, because:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/backup0/home/dexter> gcc -print-libgcc-file-name
/usr/lib/libgcc.a

Its output is not canonical. I this dpkg should fallback to default.
At this time it dies because of wrong gcc version.
