On ia64, using gcc-2.97, I was unable to compile version 1.8.3.1 until I added an include of <string.h> to include/dpkg-db.h. With that, all is well.
Lots of warnings about "cast to pointer from integer of a different size"... but no apparent harm done. Bdale
