DAEMON=/usr/sbin/venus start-stop-daemon --start --verbose --background --exec $DAEMON appears to succeed but the daemon dies immediately with SigInit: setpgid failed (1) in /var/log/coda/venus.err. start-stop-daemon --start --verbose --exec $DAEMON & works properly (except that log output goes to the console, not log files; I think this has to do with venus, not start-stop-daemon). This breakage seems to have appeared with dpkg 1.10; the init script worked fine until a recent upgrade, but I've done a couple of upgrades over the period of trying to find who killed Venus, so I'm not sure exactly when this happened.
