Actually, I'm going to have to take that back. I don't grok enough of dpkg's internals to do something major like this right now. Specifically the case I had trouble with is when we need to modify other package lists when installing a package. For someone who really knew dpkg internals well though, it probably wouldn't be too hard to implement, starting from my SHA1 sums patch. I hope the SHA1 patch can go in as-is.
