I've done an upgrade to dpkg 1.10.9 on my home machine and now the dpkg
binary has disappeared and i can't do anything with dselect/apt! how do i

Get the dpkg debfile and extract it with dpkg-deb -x if you still
have dpkg-deb. If not grab the dpkg nondebbin .tar.gz from the
projects subdirectory on any debian mirror and use the dpkg binaries
in there.
