i386, 1.10.10, fails with an error message(1) alpha(lully, 1.10.10), and sparc64(auric, 1.9.21) both fail with an error message(1). Could you do some more investigation? gdb the core, and/or compile a non-stripped dpkg? 1: dpkg: --set-selections does not take any argument
