We have determined that the problem with xrender not diverting was due to the fact that ldconfig was regenerating the symlink automatically. The dpkg-divert manpage should mention that diverting libraries must be done so that lib*so* (or whatever ldconfig matches against) does not match otherwise ldconfig will regenerate the symlink.
