/etc/alternatives master list

Does Debian keep a master list of /etc/alternatives aliases?

I'd like to create a /etc/alternatives/x-image-viewer for my favorite image 
viewer (its package doesn't create an alternatives entry), but I'm wondering 
if other image viewers are using some other /etc/alternatives name.
How do maintainers keep coordinated on this sort of thing?
